Fourth Graders Immerse Themselves in a New Novel

Fourth Graders Immerse Themselves in a New Novel
Terrace

Terrace Elementary School fourth graders are busy reading and analyzing the book "The Great Treehouse War" by author Lisa Graff.

The book is a fictitious story of a fifth grader who has to live alone in a treehouse one day of the week.

The students split up into multiple groups to discuss content and concepts and each group met with different teachers, including Ms. Djurdjevic, Mr. Hurwitz, Ms. Kadzielawa and Ms. Raczkowski. The groups had been given choices of books to read and worked together to decide on this specific book.

After reading the first chapter of the book, Ms. Raczkowski asked her group to write down a few questions they had about what they had just read.

The students put their questions in a cup that Ms. Raczkowski passed around.

Ms. Raczkowski read the first question and together as a group they came up with an answer.

They continued to pass the cup around and each student took a turn looking at a question and trying to help answer it.

The students in this group are really enjoying the book so far and are looking forward to reading more. Independently, students are reading, annotating and asking questions to enhance their skills.

Students in Ms. Djurdjevic's spent some time looking up words from the story they weren't familiar with in a dictionary.
