A Lesson in Camouflage

A Lesson in Camouflage
Terrace

Terrace Elementary School first graders in Ms. O'Brien and Ms. Schaefer's classes learned what camouflage is and how and why animals use it.

The students first watched a short video in which they looked at an image and tried to find the camouflaged animal.

The students learned that animals use camouflage to protect themselves from predators and about the different types of camouflage animals use.

They learned that some animals can slowly change their color based on their surroundings while others, like an octopus, can change their colors almost instantly.

The students then had the task of finding camouflaged moths on several trees in the hallway.

One of the trees only had one moth hidden on it, while others had many moths on it.

After this activity they came together and discussed what they found.

The finished up the lesson by making their own camouflaged moth and hid it somewhere in the classroom.
