Before diving into their first phonics lesson of the new year, first graders at Terrace Elementary School had the chance to share with their classmates what they did over the winter break.

The students passed around a baby Groot stuffed animal and had fun sharing what they did over the break, such as going on vacation or seeing a movie.

They then gathered on the carpet and Ms. Schaefer read them a book called The Magical Yet.

The story was about a child who needs reminding that even though they cannot do something yet, they will with time and practice.

After the story, it was time for their phonics lesson.

The students practiced the single letter long vowels "E," "I" and "O," reading and saying the words out loud together.

They then had to read, spell and write the words "new," "why," "school" and "friend."

Mrs. Schaefer incorporated some fun movements when saying the words which helped the students memorize them.

The students had fun using their arms to make a crocodile mouth and then bite down when saying one of the words.

When they were done the students wrote each of the words twice in their books and they moved on to reading a short story as a class.
